FREE HOME THERAPY

FREE HOME THERAPY

I came up with what I think is a great idea today. On my new website that I am working on http://TheStrokeCoach.com, I will create a way to provide free home therapy to stroke survivors. This will fill an enormous need because for the vast majority of survivors there therapy usually ends when the insurance provided therapy runs out.

In his wonderful book “Stronger After Stroke” by Peter Levine, Mr. Levine, a therapist himself describes Home Exercise Program (HEP)  and unfortunately what the initials mostly stand for and that is to, ”Hand em photocopies”.

Let’s face it, therapists can’t afford to hold your hand forever. When the money runs out so does the treatment.

Real therapy for the survivor should begin when the paid therapy ends, but that is seldom the case.

Continuing the treatment on your own is cost prohibitive for most people.Especially those like myself who have become disabled and are unable to work.

My challenge now is to organize a network of therapists around the country who would be willing to offer at least one free visit and perhaps a follow up visit with a stroke or TBI survivor who is no longer covered by insurance and who has a desire to improve in some meaningful way.

After receiving clearance from their doctor, the survivor would then make an appointment with the local therapist that is in our network. During this consultation the therapist and the survivor would work out a plan of attack towards working on some specific goals of improvement. It could be reaching and grasping with the affected hand or relearning to type.

Each person is different as is each stroke. Everyone’s goals are different but with at least some new direction from a qualified professional therapist along with information which will be on my website, the survivor will be able to begin to work on the areas that are the most important to them.

The therapist will be rewarded by the extra exposure of being on my website. They can also let the patients know their customary charge and with hopefully some sort of a discount the patient may be able to afford more one on one treatment. It will be great advertisement and should generate many referrals for the therapist as well.

The therapist will also have the satisfaction of helping another human being thus raising their own awareness towards creating a more awakened global consciousness.

I would appreciate any feedback on this concept, especially from medical professionals, therapists, survivors and caregivers.
