The Lesson of Mycle Brandy
After the lesson I and many others were taught every day for the past eight months,
I think I will find it difficult to to justify to myself the idea about quitting anything really worthwhile ever again
I am talking about the lesson of Mycle Brandy's 8 month 3,000 mile walk across America.
You don't think that he didn't think of quitting from time to time during his epic journey?
Mycle Brandy began walking across America from Orange County Ca. to Washington DC. on his 59th birthday.
His birthday is Feb. 14, Valentines Day.
Mycle, a four time stroke survivor wants to be an example that people can still do things even though they may
have some physical challenges. He is also raising funds for the American Heart/Stroke Association.
Do you think Mycle had some challenges during the past 8 months?
How about the snowstorms or bullets whizzing over his head in Arizona?
Walking with obscurity during the first several months? Mycle who?
How about carrying a 90 pound backpack in 100 degree and 95% humidity in the Midwest with no shade?
How about having no shoulder with cars and trucks whizzing by just inches away?
Or thinking where you will sleep that night.
Then of course there is the issue of getting rides back and forth from his motes,
this way he could begin where he left off the night before.
He often needed to hire a cab just for his bag alone.
Or coming up with the money to stay at a different motel each night and buying his food.
Then there is the dealing with the disappointment of not getting a sponsor for a support vehicle.
Or little things like doing laundry and dodging tornado's, thunderstorms and flesh eating horse flies.
In just eight days Mycle will have completed his 8 month 3,000 mile walk on Oct. 10, 2010
He averaged roughly a half a marathon each and every day which is 13 miles.
I'm sure I haven't even begun to scratch the surface of the hardships that he has endured during his journey.
All the while during this time Mycle was reaching out to others offering encouragement and hope.
He stopped to visit every hospital and rehab center that he could along his route.
He was a regular guest in our chat room at Strokes Suck's stroke support.
During this time he was the one offering inspiration and hope to others.
I'm going out on a limb here but I bet there were some days where he would have rather just stayed in bed.
No, I think it will be harder for me to quit something that I have committed to after the lesson I learned from Mycle Brandy.
