DEPRESSION
Depression is a topic often discussed not only on stroke support groups like our own but it is inescapable subject wherever you go especially on our American television programs.
I am not an expert on Depression though I was diagnosed with it shortly after suffering my first stroke over 4 years ago.
Who wouldn't feel depressed being confined to a wheelchair with a broken mind and body not knowing if you will ever walk again?
I guess I have shied away from talking about it because I have developed personal strategies to at least in my mind to have overcome this very real affliction.
I would never attempt to be so arrogant to suggest that what works for me will work for another.
That said I do believe that there are strategies and techniques available to many people without taking anti-depressant drugs.
I am not suggesting that anyone presently taking anti-depressants discontinue taking them. Always consult first with your doctor before making any changes in any medication. Anti-depressants very well may be the best option for you. Only you and your doctor can make that determination.
I am suggesting that you look at all alternatives before someone convinces you that you absolutely have no control over your health without taking a certain pill.
Anti-depressants are a multi billion dollar industry for the pharmaceutical companies. It stands to reason that they have a lot at stake in perpetuating the idea that we need to take these all the time. Ask questions to your doctor keeping in mind that most drugs have side effects. Can these side effects be harmful to you? Is it worth the risk?
Just ask questions, be aware of your own body and keep an open mind to other alternatives.
Presently in our Discussion forum on Strokes Suck Facebook we have a Topic addressing strategies that some people have found useful to combat this illness.
We welcome you insight and participation. What I think and believe may not be right or resonate with you but perhaps a suggestion from another more experienced person could be the answer that will help you make an enlightened decision.
Here is an interesting video and article from Dr. Joe Mercola discussing the role of anti- depressants in our society.
Once again please do not make
any changes in your medication without first speaking with your doctor.
If you are not feeling up to par anti- depressants may be a temporary
answer for you. Only your doctor and you can come to that conclusion.
